A long time ago, the Political Compass took the internet1 by storm by visualizing a division between social and economic political spectra. Today, I’m announcing the rollout of a different political compass: The Conflict Compass. It’s different from the original Political Compass in a few ways.
This one is based on conflict, providing a measure of support for aggression, democracy, and genocide. These dimensions are not unrelated - as a matter of historical fact, democracies are less aggressive and less prone to genocide. The original Political Compass was based on hypotheticals to solicit explicit values; the Conflict Compass is mostly based on actual conflicts to show real preferences.
It is possible to earn scores in the Dictatorship / Defense and Democracy / Aggression quadrants, but I do not expect that many people will do so - which, in many ways, is the point.
In the meme and misinformation era, I think it is very easy for people to lose sight of the principles that matter in favor of being reflexively partisan.
Or, really, the American political interest subset of it.
I'm happy with my result: aggression=-5.17 genocide=-6.00 democracy=4.44
Thanks
Democracy 5.42, Aggression -6.5, Genocide -8.33.
